Overgarven - Promo 2003 (Demo)
Self-financed

Carl: Overgarven (a uniform worn by soldiers engaged in chemical warfare) is a Greek metal band, consisting of Dig "Hammer" Nick (guitars), SP. Argy (guitars), Teo (drums), Perrys (bass) and Kostas "Sirrah" (vocals). The band started out at the end of 2001 as Warfare, but during the summer of 2002 realised there already existed a band under the same name. This debut promo-CD was recorded at Nemesis Recordings Studios in Kavala during the third week of May (or April, according to the booklet) 2003. Their music is described as metal with black and death (?) influences.

A Greek metal band... that is something new to me. This band is so new, there is absolutely no information about it other than provided in the biography. This debut promo-CD sounds very good. It contains three songs: 'World disgust', 'Just a fake' and 'Warfare of mind'. The sound quality of the promo is good and the artists sound professional. Each song is well constructed, although they do contain some cliches. The band has obviously rehearsed a lot and maybe even practised them live. The melodies sound very good and are constructive. The songs have definitely black metal influences, but tend to be mellower than the average Scandinavian band. Their music is very moody, without getting boring.

This five-piece have, in my humble opinion, created an interesting demo. They have not presented a breakthrough in the metal scene, but will attract enough attention to perhaps score a record deal. They add nothing new concerning sound or song-structure. They sound like a solid band that will probably give a good live performance.

Overgarven - Promo 2003

Album Line Up:
Dig “Hammer” Nick: Guitars
Sp. Argy: Guitars
Teo: Drums
Perrys: Bass
Kostas “Sirrah”: Vocals

Overgarven (don’t ask me what this means) comes from Alexandroupoli / Greece. The band exists form late 2001 and this is their first official recording work. Their music sounded in my ears as a blender of thrash / classic heavy (the music) and thrash / death metal (the vocals). Speaking of thrash let’s mention that they tend more to the Bay Area scene with mid tempo groovy songs.

Unfortunately the three tracks couldn’t convince me on one thing: that the band is able to tight down all their influences and create a complete arrangement. I mean listen the first track (World Disgust). It starts this a classic (and great) classic metal theme, then the vocals kick in and the rhythm section sound a bit too much “Slayer-like” to me. Also the vocals sound quite weak compared with the music.

The promo comes in a nicely fine print artwork with info about the band. Knowing this is the band’s first studio attempt I can’t really say that I was disappointed, everyone starts from somewhere. If they manage to blend their influences in a better way they will offer us a lot in the future. But until then…

Black/Death-ish Heavy Metal
Greece

Lots of demos sound and look fucking professional nowadays. Yet, sometimes it happens that you find good or even better ideas in the cheaper ones. Overgarven apparently didn't have a Rockfeller wallet still they succeeded in releasing a quite correct demo and - most importantly - they did it with their heart and soul. This "promo 2003" isn't meant to become a fragmentation bomb that will make lots of waves in the international Metal scene but I think it's one of the freshest I've heard in the genre for a long while. I can't say that the guys are exceptional musicians either but I'm sure they're on the right track. And I can assure you there's nothing wrong with what they already do. Musically speaking, Overgarven play a sort of Metal with Black and Death Metal influences. Lots of riffs will probably remind you of some good old-fashioned Heavy Metal but the harsh vocal tessitura make the songs sound a little more brutal and intense. Now show 'em some support cause they deserve it...

This 5 member greek band for sure will shock on their country and perhaps also outside it. With this 3 song promo cd they got the attention for listening and the respect by their music, a high melody inside death metal, sometimes dark and mystic and with some sad feelings, that are perfectly printed on the intense guitar riffs and solos so accuracy to the musical way they give. All the arrangements are so cared, but I think drums could give more emphasis to the music, because its sound is not so well defined and goes behind the guitars, fulltime leaders, but with good sound, maybe abusing a bit of reverb.

Very good promo from a melodic death band with high heavy influences, variated and quality full. I hope some record label focus its eyes on them soon.

OVERGARVEN -"Promo 2003"
Self-financed, 2003 6.5/10

Overgarven is a uniform which is worn by soldiers in the case of a chemical war but it is also the name of a band from Greece. Overgarven formed at the end of 2001 under the name Warfare but since there were and had been other bands with that name they changed into the present one. They seem just a little bit obsessed with war, don't you think? Anyway, in their bio they state that their music is described as metal generally with influences mainly from black and some from death metal. I dare to disagree though because there is very, very little sounding like black metal here except for maybe the vocals which are somewhere inbetween what Marcus Ehlin is doing in Siebenbürgen and Devlin respectively. Instead their music could best be described as a mixture of melodic death metal and slightly bombastic heavy metal I think. Even though the riffing is somewhat generic and they lack a strong personal profile this is a good enough first effort from the band and especially the vocals are very well done. They could go somewhere if they work hard on writing stronger song material. Overgarven will primarily appeal to fans of melodic death metal.

OVERGARVEN -"Promo 2003"

Songs: 1."World Disgust", 2."Just A Fake", 3."Warfare Of Mind".

Overgarven came from the ashes of the first line-up of Crossover. They started as Warfare in 2001 but they changed their name to Overgraven a year later. I thought they would play the same music as Crossover and that's Black/Death Metal, but they sound different, although not entirely different. Their music is definitely easier to listen to, it is dark and evil at times. Their influences come from Black Metal mainly, but the riffs they use come from classic Heavy Metal. Their songs are dark and atmospheric mainly because of the vocals and some melodies. It is difficult to put them is a certain category and that works to their advantage. The song structure is very good. Although it follows classic heavy metal patterns, it is enriched with many riffs and also a couple of solos, so the result is never tiring. The vocals are pretty good, totally into the feel of the music, while the production is satisfying, but it could have been better. This demo is meant for the labels, but you can buy it if you like.

Jo, mal wieder was aus Griechenland. Kontakt: overgarven@mail.gr

Overgarven - Promo 2003

This is the first demo of this band from Greece. They play a mixture of thrash metal with death vocals. This demo has three songs. The production is very good and the sound of music too. Also the whole artwork is very good for a demo release. I will wait their next work, until then….
